Thick Ledge

While our 2017 Kitchen of the Year did not skimp on space, San Francisco designer Jon de la Cruz used plenty of efficient secrets to max out the space. The chunky 11/4-inch-thick Caesarstone counter extends the wall up to the base of the window, making a spot to get a soap dispenser (or wine glass).

Dark Cabinetry

At a Manhattan apartment, the present kitchen cabinets were painted Benjamin Moore Aura in Black. "I needed it to look less boring and more such as a smart butler's pantry," designer Lilly Bunn says. The Roman colour is in Sherry's & Holland Belfour linen.

Wicker Furniture

A custom Holland & Company farm dining table at a Georgetown rowhouse does double-duty as a dinner place and work surface, whereas paneled appliances seamlessly blend in with the cabinetry at Benjamin Moore's White Dove. The actual illusion comes from Mainly Baskets in the form of seats. Designer Sarah Bartholomew went to tie the room to the backyard that was adjoining, small kitchen renovations on a budget.

Glossy Lacquer

As soon as you decide what colour to go for, don't forget about the finish. A New York kitchen at a wine red from Fine Paints of Europe received a high-gloss coating that "helped the little space feel larger," Nick Olsen states.

Stovetop Shelf

To enlarge a very small kitchen in his San Francisco apartment, designer Scot Meacham Wood added additional shelves. The cabinetry is in Ralph Lauren Paint's Interior Semigloss at Scuba Black. The curtains are a Christopher Hyland plaid.
